Multifamily Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy and is an evidence-based practice with a goal of resulting in positive long-term lifestyle changes for participants.

Length and Style of Treatment

  • 5 Month program, which includes individual and group therapy sessions, with the adolescent and a primary support in each group.  Each group is 1.5 hours and meets weekly
  • Adolescent can be in OP or lOP, and will meet for an individual as well
  • Both the adolescent and the family will have access to coaching calls with one of the 2 primary therapists running the groups

Multifamily DBT addresses these factors

  • Increasing the teens and families capabilities by teaching specific skills for self-regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and balanced thinking and acting
  • Structuring the environment to motivate, reinforce, and individualize  appropriate use of the skills
  • Improve the teens and families motivation to increase the use of new skills, reduce prior dysfunctional behaviors, and identify  factors that led to the problematic behaviors
  • Psycho-education on the biosocial theory which helps to explain the vulnerabilities of the teen to the problematic behaviors
